TERMINATOR 4 Spoiler Buzz

Terminator 4 LogoFilming began just a month ago (May 5) but it’s out there, as present as a killer Skynet machine: A buzzkill spoiler for Terminator 4 — also uncomfortably known as Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. As usual, we report on the spoiler but never include it. If you must, here’s your Terminator 4 plot spoiler, accurate or not, courtesy Ain’t It Cool News. (You have to scroll past a whole lot of personal attack B.S. which, I suppose, actually passes for a movie blog post…)

If you want the official story on the movie, check out director McG’s Warner Brothers’ T4 blog. McG claims only three people know the film’s ending, but we’re not sure that’s in response to all this spoiler hubbub. He did include the following concept art a couple weeks ago (click for the biggie).

How do you Lobby readers feel about the idea of Terminator 4? Against my better judgment, we’re really looking forward to this one.

About four years ago, I worked on marketing for a Terminator 3 product (I won’t say which one, but it rhymes with “videogame”). Someone on the inside told me T3: Rise of the Machines was a really solid science fiction movie. I responded skeptically, if only in answer to any movie with ‘3′ in the title. But that person was right.

Terminator 3 is a wholly enjoyable film. Certainly not an overdone blue-tinted James Cameron effort, but maybe that’s a good thing — Jonathan Mostow’s take was more than commendable, and the ending was excellent, both as signature and jumping off point.

For Terminator 4, some plusses:

Christian Bale:: Christian Bale as John Connor. C’mon, that’s almost too good to be true. If this franchise continues — and there are talks about a fresh trilogy — Bale will be both Connor and Batman. That’s like Harrison Ford playing both Han Solo and Indiana Jones for a precious few years in the early ’80s.

:: The Screenwriters. Co-writers John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris, the same team behind T3. Their track record isn’t stellar (Catwoman, The Net) but they knew how to reveal that machine revolt in T3.

:: The Plot. Director McG (We Are Marshall) has said we’ll see the origins of the T-101, the Terminator machine Arnold Schwarzenegger first made famous in Cameron’s 1984 mid-budget classic. The time-space thing comes back around again…

One drawback: Terminator 4 will be a tame PG-13, but the filmmakers claim it didn’t hurt Batman Begins, so why not.

Terminator 4 hits theaters May 22, 2009.

I think The Net’s heyday was pretty much just the weekend it was released in theaters.
