THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL… Stale?

November 5, 2008. By all accounts, a new era in world history begins. So has The Day The Earth Stood Still suddenly lost some of its impact?

In about five weeks, the remake to Robert Wise’s classic cautionary tale will hit theaters, with Keanu Reeves in the role made famous by Michael Rennie. But after last night’s generally joyous change in American politics, do some of the story’s ideas still hold as much power?

If you’ve seen the original (good Lord, you should), you know it’s a slap in the face to political conflict, xenophobia, and general man-on-man hatred. Hell, that stuff was day-to-day modus operandi under the current American Administration… but we’re now in the zenith of post-election nirvana. No day will feel as hopeful, peaceful and potentially collaborative as this day after one of the nation’s most dramatic elections.

So where does that leave the “you’re killing yourselves” plot? Well, there’s always the environmental angle, a far more evergreen (hah!) approach. (See Allison’s Day the Earth Stood Still preview for more details.) And, when in doubt, it’s easy to just detonate many buildings, conjure many special effects, and blend many CGI visuals. That’ll show ‘em.

Speaking of artistic know-how, here’s your chance to get creative and become a part of The Day The Earth Stood Still. 20th Century Fox is looking for fan art interpretations of the bully robot GORT. (Isn’t that the trail mix stuff you take hiking?) If fans show you some voting love, your work can be featured at IMAX screenings or, in Peter Jackson-style… the DVD! (Gasp!)

Check it out at GORT Lives

A bit slow, thought there would be more of a story line, but any movie with Keanu Reeves is worth watching.
