THE EYE: New Movie Preview, Trailer, Poster

Jessica Alba and Alessandro Nivola star in the remake of Chinese horror hit The Eye, and we’ve got some preview material from our friends at Lionsgate. Hey, if you’re gonna redo yet another Asian horror movie, you may as well cast attractive stars.
But The Eye teaser poster passes on the good-looking actors and goes for creepy. The image is reminiscent of The Grudge, when fingers and a hand appear from the lead character’s hair. (Ick.)
The original Chinese The Eye (aka Gin gwai) was released in 2002, and had a limited, arthouse run in the U.S. It was a better-than-average chiller about a corneal transplant patient who suffers supernatural visions after her surgery. She eventually traces the history of her transplanted eyes, leading her to another country and a tale out of The Ring. So much Asian horror folklore focuses on trails left by the dead.
This new version follows the same plot, with Alba as the eye recipient — catch how cliched her “acting blind” seems in the trailer. Nivola plays the surgeon and Parker Posey is Alba’s sister. From the Lionsgate details, it sounds like a greater emphasis may be placed on family and friends thinking Alba’s character’s going crazy. If that’s true, it’s a good touch of American paranoia.
THE DIRECTORS: Newcomers David Moreau and Xavier Palud. The original was directed by two guys (The Pang Brothers), and so is this one. The French team created the horror film Them (aka Ils), a European hit that made the film festival rounds in the U.S. this year. (Check out the site for Them… it warns you not to enter the site if you have a heart condition! Very William Castle.)
THE WRITERS: Sebastian Gutierrez (Gothika, one of the now-infamous Snakes on a Plane writers) and Hillary Seitz (the U.S. version of Insomnia)
THE RELEASE DATE: February 1, 2008
