THE HAPPENING Early Review… Not So Good

There’s a storm comin’…
A review for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening has hit the web and Night’s newest doesn’t sound promising. A guest reviewer at Collider saw what sounds like a rough cut of the movie (sans score) and was wholly disappointed.
Here’s the Collider review, but please be aware: First, this is a rough cut review. Second, it’s from a ’friend of a guy’, so experience and reliability are the reader’s to determine. Third, there are some spoilers — major spoilers are hidden, so reading them is optional.
The main complaints from said reviewer? Horrible acting from Mark Wahlberg and counter-intuitive pacing that makes the film seem silly rather than dramatic. Uh oh. It’s hard to imagine Mark Wahlberg being bad after The Departed and Boogie Nights but watching this extended The Happening clip (after Shyamalan’s intro), it does feel a bit like Wahlberg’s eyebrows are taped to the top of his head, to keep that surprised expression with little effort.
But, the response isn’t horrible and the rest of the images you see in The Happening trailer are just awesome, so we still have hope. We really really want this to be good. We want, need, horror options other than Saw V and Saw VI. Something for the thinking man and woman.
The Happening is in theaters June 13th. See our previous announcement about an early spoiler as well as our official The Happening preview.

[…] UPDATE (05.20.08) An early movie review of The Happening is out there. Here’s our coverage. […]
I now hate the guy that made this movie. I pray to Cthulu that he doesn’t completely ruin Avatar… I could never forgive him for that.
I agree, I’m sick of shocker horror films like Saw. I’ve seen them, they scared the junk out of me but I know how the movie ends before I even start watching it. I have high hopes for this movie given Shyamalan’s track record. Signs and The Sixth Sense left me wondering the whole time. If Shyamalan is copying ideas, which I’m hearing on a lot of other sites, then he’s picking the right people to copy. That’s what I think at least. I could care less whether he stole the idea. Who gives a rat’s behind?? Are you gonna enjoy the movie less beacuse it’s not completely original? Only if you’re a stuck up assinine pessimist. Sorry to rant. haha
Rant away. I never heard the copying ideas stuff. What movies was that said about?
My friend told me that the reason why people go nuts is because there are plants that are releasing some toxins that make em go weird…

Shyamalan isn’t the man behind Avatar. James Cameron, of Titanic and Terminator fame, is the writer-director on Avatar, scheduled for theaters December 18, 2009

Norm S., you’re wrong.
M. Night IS the man behind Avatar because there are two Avatar movies coming out. M. Night’s is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, a popular Nickelodeon cartoon.

You are completely right. You say “Avatar” to most movie fans and we think of Cameron.
Interesting to note, that the Shyamalan project did have to acquiesce and change the movie name to The Last Airbender.
Thanks for calling me out on that one, and for the wikipedia link.
