The Ubiquitous Nicolas Cage

My filmcritic.com colleagues recently listed the ten most embarrassing ”paycheck performances,” where notable actors went slumming for cash. Michael Caine, Marlon Brando and Dame Judi Dench are there, among others. It got me thinking: If Nicolas Cage continues his apparently haphazard selection of movie roles, he’s gonna end up on the next version of that list.
The current Bangkok Dangerous is the perfect example of a film far beneath the talents Cage has displayed throughout his career. You could easily name a dozen movies in which Cage has contributed impressively — yet, the dead-brained action thrillers continue to surface. If we assume all of Mr. Cage’s mortgages are paid, he must really dig action movies.
And there appears to be no let up in Cage’s “I’ll do it!” schedule. As we mentioned in last week’s Review Roundup, Cage’s name is listed — as the lead actor, mind you — on nine movies scheduled for 2009. In all likelihood, one or two will be shelved or moved. If not, there probably will be more calendar months with a Nicolas Cage movie then without.
Here’s what those nine films look like: Six dramas. (Three seem to be hardcore serious.) Two need only Cage’s voice — one is animated; in the other, he’ll voice a guinea pig. Directors involved include Werner Herzog, Roman Polanski, Alex Proyas and John Carpenter.
For more details, I’ve written about the nine films on filmcriticblogs.com, where I’m a semi-regular contributor. Enjoy!
