Apocalypse Now Blu-ray 3-Disc Set Box ArtThis is the end. My only friend, the end…
So begins Francis Ford Coppola’s bizarre American war classic, Apocalypse Now, as performed by the Doors, and accompanied by a searing image of a firebombed Vietnam landscape.

It’s the film’s opening attack, an intro to a symbolic surreal nightmare of war, a film that’s become more legendary with time — especially considering the amazing behind-the-scenes doc Hearts of Darkness and Coppola’s 3-hour, 22-minute extended version of the movie, Apocalypse Now Redux.

On October 19, this entire Apocalypse Now world will arrive on Blu-ray and Digital Download. Here’s the just-released trailer:

The film was the height of Coppola’s hubris, and one of the last great examples of a film production gone utterly, ridiculously, over-the-top, over-budget haywire. You can almost feel the desperation and madness in some scenes.

There will be two Apocalypse Now Blu-ray sets (but that first one is really something else…)
3-Disc Full Disclosure Edition: Includes both versions of the film, Hearts of Darkness, a collectible booklet, and plenty of extras
2-Film Set

I happened to catch the Redux version in the theater, specifically in the esteemed Brattle Theater in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. When Kilgore (Robert Duvall) hollers, “One day, this war is gonna end…” without a second half to his statement, the full-house crowd laughed and clapped, grateful for the sly commentary. A great in-person movie moment.
