Can you name the independent director smart enough to know that Elisabeth Moss should be a bona fide film star? Alex Ross Perry is the answer, he of the enticing throwback style (think Allen meets Cassavetes) that pervades his breakout The Color Wheel and critics’ favorite, Listen Up Philip. In the latter film, Perry gives Moss a juicy supporting role as Jason Schwartzman’s jilted love interest, and Moss eats it up. She embraces Perry’s meaty closeups and responds remarkably well to Schwartzman’s emotionally flat-lined delivery. I saw Moss pop up on quite a few 2014 best-of ballots, and rightfully so.
Now, with Queen of Earth, Perry puts the actress in the leading role, in what looks like a chance at a superstar turn. And a further homage to the true indie period of American film.
Queen of Earth premieres in New York on August 26, with a national rollout to follow.
