Trailer, Preview: THE TRIALS OF TED HAGGARD
By Norm Schrager at January 30, 2009 | 12:11 am | Print
Ted Haggard is full of shit. The popular Indiana-born evangelical spent a lot of time preaching, but not too much time practicing, if you know what I mean. He never had a problem railing against gay sex — but it would seem he sure did dig it himself. Not to mention the methamphetamines…
So pure Uncle Ted jumped on the Oprah Winfrey show this week to talk about his sexual confusion, therapy sessions and gosh, that amazing intimate relationship with his wife. This guy’s a riot, and he’s the subject of a new 40-minute documentary. After appearing in Alexandra Pelosi’s Friends of God, Haggard gets the celluloid all to himself in Pelosi’s latest documentary, HBO’s The Trials of Ted Haggard.

The lowdown on Alexandra Pelosi: The 38-year-old filmmaker is indeed the daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but she loves pointing the camera at the ultra-conservative side of America. She’s best known for her Emmy-nominated documentary Journeys with George, a look at George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign.

Full of it and still in denial it seems. Pelosi’s low-tech style (though I noted a lot more 2 camera set-ups this time) sacrifices production quality for intimacy, and is worth the trade. She hangs around for a long time and eventually gets them when their guard is down and their internal filters are turned off, not unlike the girls gone wild.
