A few things: Zooey Deschanel, music by Regina Spektor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (awesome in so many movies lately), and the words “post-modern love story”. Now you know everything there is to know about me because on those things alone, I’ll go see this movie.*

The film uses a myriad of techniques (split screens, dance numbers, animation, etc.) to explore the reasons why the relationship (of 500 days) between Summer (Deschanel) and Tom (Gordon-Levitt) didn’t work out. This is another one of those Sundance darlings hitting the mainstream and it definitely seems worth your time. The concept and post-modernism reminds me a little of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Interestingly, Eternal’s Gondry also dabbled in music videos prior to making all those awesome features – just how 500‘s Marc Webb started out.
Release Date: July 17, 2009 (limited release)
(Norm’s Note: For you Boston-area readers, 500 Days of Summer will be at the Independent Film Festival of Boston in late April. Much more on the IFFB soon.)
