Trailer Tuesday: A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS

Director Wayne Wang’s career has been a curious blend of Chinese culture, quiet personal relationships and big Hollywood movies. He followed his 1982 low-budget breakthrough, Chan Is Missing, with Chinese-focused films like Dim Sum, Eat a Bowl of Tea and the exceptional The Joy Luck Club. But take a look at his films of this decade and you’d think he was Chris Columbus: the predictable Maid in Manhattan (now in TV development), Because of Winn-Dixie and the charming Queen Latifah vehicle Last Holiday.

With A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, Wang returns to his origins. He adapts Yiyun Li’s novel about the clash between father and daughter, Chinese tradition and American culture.

LOBBY NOTE: Wang also adapted a Yiyun Li short story into the 2007 short The Princess of Nebraska.

A Thousand Years of Good Prayers opens September 19, 2008 in New York.
