Trailer Tuesday: BANGKOK DANGEROUS

Looks like Nicolas Cage has been getting hair tips from Tom Hanks. In his upcoming movie, Bangkok Dangerous, his new scraggly ‘do is the very essence of the no-time-to-comb-I’m-a-hired-assassin look.

His latest job brings him to Thailand where the neighborhood pickpocket and the deaf-mute hottie help him grow a heart and quit his cold killing ways. But as you can guess, the baddies who hired him aren’t about to throw him a retirement party.

Written and directed by the Pang brothers — known for their horror films (like The Eye, The Eye 2, um, The Eye 3) and the awful haunted house thriller The Messengers. Bangkok Dangerous is actually a remake of a film of the same name, which the Pang brothers directed in 1999. In that version, the assassin was the deaf-mute — very John Woo.

So, in the original, the whole hard-edged assassin lifestyle is shaped by the fact that the anti-hero can’t hear the gunshots around him or the people pleading for their lives. But for this new American version, the Pang brothers realized “that from a marketing purpose Nic needs to have some lines“… so complex character and logical motivation go out the window. Again. Darn.
