Trailer Tuesday: BEDTIME STORIES vs. INKHEART

Is it just me or have you also noticed movies seem to be coming out in pairs, lately? That is, two movies that share virtually the same story are promoted at the same time? Take for example Disney’s Adam Sandler flick, Bedtime Stories, about a man who tells imagined tales to his niece and nephew, tales which ultimately come true — and the Brendan Fraser movie Inkheart about… a man who reads stories that then come true.
The Bedtime Stories trailer is above and, in my opinion, it totally wins the trailer smackdown. Inkheart (see the trailer here), although definitely bigger in action, adventure and effects, had me bored after seconds of Narnia faux-grandeur.
While I wisely skipped out on Zohan, Chuck, and Larry, Sandler comes off pretty funny when he’s meant to entertain kids. Adam Shankman (Hairspray, The Pacifier) directs what seems like a random group of good-but-lesser-seen actors (Courteney Cox, Keri Russell, Guy Pearce, and Lucy Lawless) in a film about Uncle Skeeter (Sandler) trying to capitalize on the ‘tell a story and it comes true’ power until he realizes that only the kids’ additions make the tales true.
Fun for the kids and parents, but beware: If the little ones Google it, they’ll find Madonna’s ‘Bedtime Stories’ as well.
Written by: Tim Herlihy, the same dude that helped pen several Adam Sandler films (The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, Little Nicky) and the more kid-friendly Matt Lopez.
Release Date: December 25, 2008 (Inkheart comes out January 9, 2009)
