Trailer Tuesday: DOUBT

As Norm mentioned a few weeks back, this is the time where the studios pull out the big guns, packing in all the “Oscar-worthy” dramas they can fit in these last months of 2008 eligibility. Among that crowd is Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman (also appearing in Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York) and Amy Adams. That’s right, they’re not joking around.

Set in the early ’60s, this is the screen adaptation of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a nun (Streep) who accuses her parochial school’s resident priest (Hoffman) of abusing one of the students. One small detail though: She doesn’t really have any proof. Just her intuition and another nun’s (Adams) suggestion. From the trailer, you can see some explosive arguments. The film leans toward either character’s side so you’re never 100% certain who is actually in the right.
Streep is worlds away from Mamma Mia and it’s a nice change-of-pace to see Hoffman play the “normal” guy (that doesn’t seem appropriate given what he’s accused of, but if you watch the trailer, you’ll see he’s more Mr. Nice Guy than Mr. Creepy). The only downside is that Doubt may be too much like a play with tons of exposition in front of the same backdrop. The trailer alone is so chock full of dialogue, you wonder what is left to say.
Release Date: December 2008
Director: The only other film Shanley has directed is Joe Versus the Volcano. He has also written Moonstruck (which won the Best Screenplay Oscar), Alive, and Live from Baghdad (nominated for an Emmy).
