Trailer Tuesday: REAL TIME

I don’t usually post trailers for films that have a vague “coming soon” release date. But after spending the weekend re-watching Undeclared which stars Jay Baruchel (who you’ve also seen in Tropic Thunder and Knocked Up), I felt convinced to post about one of his latest films, Real Time which premeried at Slamdance 2008. (See our Slamdance 2008 recap.)

Real Time does just what it says, showing in real time the interaction between a compulsive gambler, Andy (Baruchel), and the man hired to kill him, Reuban (played by Randy Quaid + accent). Reuban gives Andy one hour to do whatever he wants with his last moments on Earth (supervised by Reuban, of course). Andy doesn’t prove his life to be much of a sad loss when he chooses things like hookers and revenge during that hour.
A tense drama with some comedic elements (how could you not with Baruchel?!), Real Time has only a few supporting characters since the focus is all on Andy and Reuban. The running time is 80 minutes, showing us the full hour of Andy’s life-at-end with some spare time for the initial set up. The buzz all over is that this film has one of the best endings ever made and that Baruchel and Quaid are amazing together.
Writer-Director: Randall Cole, a Canadian whose other film is 19 Months. Here’s an interview with him about Real Time and the realities of being an indie director.
