Trailer Tuesday: THE BROTHERS BLOOM
UPDATE (09.04.08) The Brothers Bloom has new release dates: December 19 in NY and LA; opening wide January 16, 2009.
ORIGINAL POST: There’s something new and different about The Brothers Bloom. It’s certainly not an original story (heck, even Lost has done every con man angle there is). But some of the actors and roles are surprising — like slapstick Rachel Weisz. The trailer doesn’t scream “pay attention to everything that is great about me,” but by the time it ends you realize you were smiling for its entirety. So now you’re in.
The Brothers Bloom, written and directed by Rian Johnson (Special Jury Prize winners at Sundance for the enormously amusing Brick) tells the story of two con men brothers (Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody) going for their last hurrah, involving a New Jersey heiress (Rachel Weisz), a Japanese explosives expert named Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi, who you might remember — in all her glory — from Babel), and a Belgian that may or may not be Belgian (Robbie Coltrane, now of Harry Potter fame).
The con? Get the heiress to pay for their world travels, and convince her that her life’s in danger so she runs off in such a hurry, leaving millions with them. Unfortunately for the brothers, the heiress is just glad to be out of New Jersey (I refuse to insert the appropriate NJ joke here, and leave it to your imagination).
Release Date: October 24, 2008 12.19.07 in NY and LA; 1.16.09 everywhere else in the U.S. Moved again. May 15, 2009 in select markets and May 29, 2009 elsewhere.
Also Starring: Norah Zehetner, who played Eden in Heroes!
