Troma Lives! POULTRYGEIST An Early Hit
It’s been 22 years since The Toxic Avenger established Troma as the treasure trove of trash. Now the indie studio is enjoying more buzz than ever with their sick skewering of fast food and fowl, Poultrygeist, Night of the Chicken Dead. Tonight, Troma reported a $12,000 one-screen box office this weekend for Poultrygeist (In comparison, last weekend’s premiere of Made of Honor averaged about $6,800 a screen.)
I could describe Poultrygeist six ways to Sunday and not do as well as the press whores from Troma themselves. So enjoy the twisted trailer. And if you really want to see the super sick stuff, here’s the Not Safe For Work Poultrygeist trailer. Frankly, it’s not even safe for your home. Or a motel room. Or your car.
As usual, Troma and wacky godfather Lloyd Kaufman (right) are stirring up as much press — and trouble — as humanly possible. Submitted for your approval: Last week, Kaufman dressed up as Poultrygeist character Colonel Cluck and boycotted the troubled Tribeca Film Festival, after the fest forced the Village East theater to stop promoting Lloyd’s loonies.
Needless to say, Friday’s inaugural Poultrygeist screening at the Village East sold out in advance. And the film’s received a warm welcome from NPR and New York Magazine. If you live in NYC, you can catch the movie all this week, five screenings daily at the Village East. Hey, LA, you’re next, starting June 13.
