What if Cloverfield Stinks?

The Statue of Liberty Head “on a roll” in Cloverfield

After roughly seven months, the faux secretive Cloverfield promotional machine has two weeks left until the monster mash hits theaters. In that time, everyone from Lost junkies to overstoked sci-fi fanboys has been salivating.

So you’re all revved up over shadowy trailers and creepy websites. Well what if the movie sucks?

We didn’t ask “What if the movie bombs?” It won’t. But since our July post about the Cloverfield hype, a few items come to mind:

1) J.J. Abrams is the film’s producer, not its director, so don’t think of this as a “J.J. Abrams movie.” The director, Matt Reeves, has no big-screen track record — at least not for this genre.

2) The Cloverfield concept may be more Blair Witch Project than we originally thought. The following message appears at the head of the latest trailer:
Message in Cloverfield Trailer
Smart, but it’s clear we have another frightfest told via personal video that’s been “found.” I hope no one’s lost in the woods in the “area formerly known as Central Park.”

3) Here’s the big one: Too many people have too many unrealistic expectations. Which usually leads to: a) A whole bunch of disappointed moviegoers saying a decent movie is horrible because they’ve been swindled and they’re pissed off; or b) A whole bunch of people who gush blindly over an average movie, unwilling to admit they’ve been had.

I’ll be seeing Cloverfield. And I’m hoping it’s great (as with every movie I see.) But sometimes, too much hype really is too much.

I have been thinking the same thing about Cloverfield . The trailers surely do not help me at all.

Luckily Scene-Stealers.com is giving tickets to screenings where I live so I can see Cloverfield for free! If you live in Kansas City then goto http://www.scene-stealers.com/general/cloverfield-ticket-giveaway/ and yours.

    - John -

And I just heard a story on NPR about the excitement most people find in seeing the Cloverfield trailers and teases ad nauseum. What do we know?
