Ranking the Star Wars Movies — 30 Years of the George Lucas Empire

Has there been a sci-fi film with more cinematic and cultural impact than Star Wars? Released 30 years ago last week — on a measly 32 screens, by the way — it single-handedly reinvigorated an entire genre and 20th Century Fox. But three decades later, where do you place this landmark movie (and its sequels/prequels) in modern history?
It’s safe to say no recent Star Wars episode (’99-’05) beats any in the original trilogy (’77-’83). Lucas started taking plotlines too seriously, not enough cool ideas for three features, etc. So how do all six films match up against one another?
According to viewer voting on the IMDb, the Star Wars rankings, as of today:
- The Empire Strikes Back (#8 in Top 250)
- Star Wars (#12)
- Return of the Jedi (#111)
- Revenge of the Sith (not in 250 — 7.9 / 10)
- Attack of the Clones (not in 250 — 6.8 / 10)
- The Phantom Menace (not in 250 — 6.3 / 10)
